A fresh coat of paint is one of the simplest and sometimes most dramatic ways to update a space without entering into a full blown renovation.  Changing colour palettes can be enough to  change the atmosphere of a single room or entire house.  Over the years paint can also fade.  Thus even repainting with the same colour can freshen up a space by eliminating scuff marks, cleaning up cut lines and restoring the sheen and strength of the colour to it's original beauty.
